If you’re trying to open or access a file or folder, but get an error code like ERROR_REPARSE_OBJECT, we’ll show you how to fix it.
This message signals that there is something wrong with a special type of shortcut called reparse. When these shortcuts are broken or pointing to the wrong place, they trigger errors.
Here is how you fix it:
How to fix the ERROR_REPARSE_OBJECT
First, consider restarting your PC. A simple reboot will reinitialize processes and close up idle apps or background processes that can lead to errors. If that won’t work, keep reading.
1. Clear Windows file cache
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type %temp% and press Enter to open the temporary files folder.
- Select all files in the folder and delete them (press Ctrl + A to select all, then press Delete).
- Restart your computer and try accessing the file again.
2. Run the DISM tool
- Press the Windows key, type CMD and select Run as administrator.
- In the Command Prompt window, type this command and press Enter: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
- Once the process is done, restart your computer and check if the error is fixed.
DISM scans for and repairs any issues with your system’s health, including fixing corrupted or missing files that could be causing an reparse object error message.
3. Run the Update Troubleshooter
- Go to Windows Settings.
- Select System > Troubleshoot.
- Select Other Troubleshooters.
- Locate Windows Update and click Run.
- Once the troubleshooting is complete, restart your computer.
If the error started appearing after an update, the troubleshooter automatically detects and fixes common update issues, potentially solving the ERROR_REPARSE_OBJECT issue.
4. Reinstall Windows (without losing files)
- Press Windows key + I to open Settings.
- Go to System > Recovery.
- Under Reset this PC, click Get Started.
- Choose Keep my files.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to reset your PC.
- Once the process is done, restart your PC and see if the ERROR_REPARSE_OBJECT issue persists.
The ERROR_REPARSE_OBJECT, like other Windows issues, such as ERROR_PWD_TOO_SHORT, can interfere with your regular tasks.
With a few basic fixes like running a SFC scan, you should be able to address this error. But if you’re among the few users who can’t get it fixed like that, follow the steps outlined at 4 to reset your PC and the issue should be gone.
