Firefox Smart Window Gets an “Organize Tabs” Button for Auto Tab Grouping

Firefox Nightly now has an “Organize Tabs” button in the Smart Window toolbar that can arrange open tabs into groups.

Smart Window is Firefox’s optional AI-powered window for desktop, with a built-in assistant that can work with tabs and browsing history. Mozilla is gradually adding more capabilities to Smart Window, and Auto Tab Grouping is one of the features being tested. The Organize Tabs feature requires Smart Window and the Nova interface.

When we click the button, Firefox analyzes our open tabs and suggests groups based on their content. It also names each group, so we do not have to decide which tabs belong together or create names ourselves.

In our test, Firefox suggested groups such as “Windows” and “Accounts”. The panel also showed which tabs Firefox had selected for each group, allowing us to review the suggestions before creating them.

Once you were happy with the suggestions, you could create the groups with a click. Firefox also provided an option to undo the grouping afterward.

You do not have to select tabs individually or create a group before using the feature. You simply click Organize Tabs, and Firefox suggests groups for related tabs.

Mozilla has already added practical features to Smart Window, including price-drop alerts. Auto Tab Grouping is another example of how the company is expanding what the experience can do.

Firefox says the tab clustering and group naming happen entirely on device, so the open-tab information does not need to be sent to a remote server for this process.

Mozilla has experimented with tab grouping for some time. We previously covered Firefox’s AI-powered Smart Tab Groups, where Firefox could suggest related tabs and group names.

The new experience takes a more direct approach. Instead of starting with a tab group and asking Firefox for suggestions, we can ask Firefox to organize our open tabs first.

Microsoft Edge already has a similar Organize tabs feature that can arrange related tabs into groups automatically. Firefox is now testing its own version through Smart Window.

Auto Tab Grouping is currently available in Firefox Nightly. Mozilla can still change the feature before it reaches other Firefox channels.
