Gears of War: E-Day will become the first game to support NVIDIA RTX Mega Geometry, a new ray-tracing technology built around Unreal Engine 5 Nanite geometry.

The game launches on October 6 and will also support DLSS 4.5 and NVIDIA Reflex on GeForce RTX GPUs.

RTX Mega Geometry brings more detailed ray tracing to Nanite

Unreal Engine 5’s Nanite system allows developers to render highly detailed objects while dynamically adjusting their level of detail.

Current ray-traced Nanite implementations typically use a separate, simplified mesh for acceleration structures. RTX Mega Geometry changes that approach by allowing ray tracing to work with much more detailed Nanite geometry.

NVIDIA says this should produce more accurate ray-traced shadows and reflections on vehicles, rocks, foliage, debris, and other complex objects.

The technology should also reduce flickering and other visual artifacts that can appear in shadows and reflections when the camera or player moves.

NVIDIA says it has spent six years developing RTX Mega Geometry.

The technology is heading to DirectX Raytracing 2.0

RTX Mega Geometry will work across GeForce RTX GPUs, although performance will depend on the GPU and selected ray-tracing settings.

GeForce RTX players will also get DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation, and NVIDIA Reflex in Gears of War: E-Day.

The underlying Mega Geometry technology is also planned for Microsoft DirectX Raytracing 2.0, or DXR 2.0.

That could eventually allow more developers to use full-detail Nanite geometry in ray-traced scenes across Unreal Engine 5 games instead of relying on simplified representations.

NVIDIA and The Coalition plan to reveal more technical details during the Xbox Gamescom broadcast on August 26 at 4 PM CEST.
