germany launches game grant to encourage developers

The gaming industry is worth hundreds of billions, and in a bid to tap into the market, Germany started a grant to promote game development in the country. It even began hosting an award show to felicitate developers from across the globe, and it included cash prizes.

The cash prizes are to incentivize and encourage developers in Germany to release exciting titles. According to a report published in PC Gamer, Michael Kellner, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, wants games like Baldur’s Gate 3 to be developed in Germany.

Wide range and creativity of games developed in Germany must be expanded further, and the potential of the industry must be utilized even more. As the federal government, we want to make an important contribution to this through our new games funding. The funding is to help ensure that games such as this year’s best international game also go on to be developed in Germany.

This year, Baldur’s Gate 3 won the Best International Game at the German Computer Game Awards!

A report from Game Developer suggests that Germany will spend €100 million ($106.92 million) over the next three years to promote game development. This year, the government will disburse $36.2 million, one-third of the three-year target!

By pumping huge amounts of money into gaming, the German government wants to develop an ecosystem at par with countries like Canada, the UK, and France, considered pioneers in the gaming space.

Whether Germany succeeds in its plans for a flourishing game industry with the sizable grant will be evident in a few years. But they can still develop a Baldur’s Gate 3 sequel since Larian has stepped away!
