God of War Leaks Hint at New Project, But Mainline Sequel Still in Question

god of war

Sony is reportedly broadening the scope of the God of War franchise with several projects in development. These include a live-action TV adaptation, a Metroidvania-style spin-off, and a remake of the original Greek trilogy.

Recent comments from Christopher Judge, the voice of Kratos, hinted at changes coming to the rumored Greek trilogy remake. While details remain limited, his remarks reignited interest in revisiting Kratos’ early adventures.

Despite persistent rumors, there is still no confirmation of a new mainline sequel set in Egypt, a setting frequently discussed among fans.

Ragnarok Anniversary Sparks Sequel Speculation

With God of War Ragnarok approaching its fifth anniversary in 2027, expectations are rising for news about the next chapter involving Kratos and Atreus. However, recent insider commentary suggests that fans may need to wait longer.

According to The Gamer, reputable leaker Ashhong suggested that a new mainline entry might not be arriving anytime soon. That claim has tempered hopes for an imminent sequel announcement.

At the same time, insider shinobi602 believes Sony Santa Monica could unveil its next game later this year, possibly during a State of Play presentation or at Summer Game Fest.

“Not a New IP” Raises More Questions

Further adding to the speculation, Jason Schreier of Bloomberg previously stated that the studio’s next project is “not a new IP.”

That phrasing fueled assumptions that the upcoming game remains connected to the God of War universe. However, “not a new IP” does not automatically confirm a direct sequel. The project could be a spin-off, a remake, or another entry tied to an existing franchise rather than a continuation of Ragnarok’s storyline.

Job listings seeking developers familiar with the combat systems from God of War further strengthened sequel rumors. Even so, those postings stop short of confirming a full-fledged Norse saga continuation.

A Broader Franchise Strategy in Motion

Industry observers believe Sony Santa Monica may be working on multiple projects simultaneously. The reported TV adaptation, spin-off, and remake efforts point toward a wider franchise expansion strategy rather than a single blockbuster sequel.

For now, PlayStation’s roadmap appears to emphasize expanding the God of War brand across different formats. The future of a mainline sequel remains uncertain, leaving fans to watch closely for any official announcements.

In other gaming news, Capcom has issued an official statement after a leaked copy of Resident Evil Requiem began circulating online. The publisher confirmed it is investigating the situation and urged players not to share or distribute unauthorized content, emphasizing that leaked builds may not reflect the final version of the game.
