Windows 11 on ARM had a lot of problems running native apps but the latest Prism update marks a huge improvement for the platform. Not long ago, Google disclosed their plans to launch their cloud storage app for ARM and now it became reality. The search king announced that the Drive Desktop Beta app has now ARM64 support.
However, don’t set your expectations too high. First of all, Google mentions in the release note that the app is in its beta testing version and it’s prone to inherent bugs. Moreover, even if the Google Drive Desktop Beta app should work just like the x86 counterpart, you will not be able to access the Outlook Meet plugin just yet.
Google also issued the requirements in order to run the app:
- Windows 11 Required:Â The beta version of Google Drive for desktop is compatible exclusively with devices running Windows 11.
- Microsoft WebView2Â Required:Â This component is typically included with Windows 11; however, if it is missing or was previously removed, our installer will prompt you to download and install it.
So, Google Drive is only available on Windows 11 and you will also need Microsoft WebView2 which should be preinstalled.
That being said, you can download Google Drive Beta for Windows 11 on ARM and it should sync with all its iterations on other devices you installed Google Drive on.
We also reported that Microsoft released the Windows 11 for ARM ISO so you can be able to perform a fresh installation or test it on a virtual machine if you want to.
With all the latest developments, it seems that the Windows 11 on ARM finally starts to look like a stable platform for development. The Prism improvements certainly pave the way for many developers to port their apps and run natively on ARM.
