Google Launches Gemini Switching Tools to Pull Users Away From ChatGPT

Google is rolling out a set of switching features for Gemini over the next few weeks, focusing heavily on reducing friction for users coming from ChatGPT.

Gemini Introduces Memory Import and Chat History Transfer

One of the biggest advantages ChatGPT has maintained is its ability to retain context across conversations. Gemini, on the other hand, previously required users to start fresh with each interaction, limiting long-term personalization.

That is now changing. Google is introducing a memory import feature that allows users to transfer preferences, relationships, and personal context directly from ChatGPT. The process involves copying a generated response or prompt between platforms, effectively recreating user context inside Gemini.

In addition, Gemini now supports full chat history import. Users can download their ChatGPT data and upload it as a ZIP file into Gemini, where conversations become searchable and can be continued seamlessly. This marks a major shift toward persistent, personalized AI experiences within Google’s ecosystem.

Google is also rebranding “past chats” as “memory” in Gemini, signaling a broader focus on long-term context and personalization. The move clearly targets one of ChatGPT’s strongest differentiators.

Google Aims to Reduce Switching Friction

The goal behind these updates is straightforward: make it easier for users to leave ChatGPT without losing their data or experience. By offering both memory transfer and chat history import, Google removes one of the biggest barriers to adoption.

These include a shopping feature integrated directly into ChatGPT, allowing users to browse and discover products within conversations. OpenAI also launched a Library feature that makes it easier to access uploaded files and images in one place.

In addition, the company introduced an AI Safety Bug Bounty program focused on preventing misuse of AI agents. The initiative encourages researchers and security experts to identify vulnerabilities related to prompt injection, data exposure, and harmful automated actions.
