GTA 5 Goes Free on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for Last-Gen Players Ahead of GTA 6
GTA 5 is getting one more major boost before Rockstar turns its full attention to GTA 6. Starting tomorrow, players who own GTA 5 on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can upgrade to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions at no extra cost.
The move arrives nearly four years after Rockstar launched the enhanced editions as paid upgrades, bringing higher frame rates, sharper visuals, and faster loading times to current-gen hardware. With GTA 6 now locked in for November 19, 2026, Rockstar appears to be lowering the barrier for millions of players still stuck on last-gen consoles.
The free upgrade includes access to every enhancement introduced on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Players can migrate both Story Mode and GTA Online progress, while unlocking support for up to 4K resolution, 60 FPS gameplay, ray-tracing features, and significantly improved load times.
Rockstar is also bundling in newer GTA Online features, including Hao’s Special Works vehicles and upgrades, Career Progress rewards, and other content previously limited to current-gen platforms.
PC players have already received similar treatment. Earlier this year, Rockstar rolled out the Enhanced edition as a free upgrade, adding ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, improved reflections, and higher frame-rate support.
There is one important limitation, however. GTA Online still does not support cross-play between PS4, Xbox One, and current-gen versions, meaning players who upgrade can only play with others on the same generation.
With GTA 6 just months away, Rockstar is giving GTA 5 one final spotlight moment while encouraging its massive player base to make the jump to newer hardware.
