Highguard’s Future in Doubt as Website Goes Down Following Massive Layoffs at the Studio
Wildlight Entertainment’s PvP raid shooter game, Highguard, appears to be in immense trouble. As spotted by many Redditors, Highguard’s official website has suddenly went offline. This comes just days after reports of massive layoffs at the studio.
At the time of writing this piece, we can also see a simple message on the Highguard website, which reads “This site is currently unavailable.” The page has reportedly remained down for nearly 24 hours, fueling uncertainity about the game’s long-term prospects. Notably, the game itself is still playable, but the lack of communication has left fans confused.
Last week, Wildlight Entertainment reportedly laid off a substantial portion of its workforce, part of what appears to be a restructuring effort. The studio has said it plans to continue iterating on Highguard with its remaining team, though details about future updates remain scarce.
As reported by PushSquare, concurrent player numbers on Steam has recently peaked at just 1,507 over 24 hours. That’s a concerning number fo a live multiplayer shooter. While console numbers aren’t available, there’s little indication that momentum is significantly stronger on other platforms.
For those unaware, Tencent was among the major investors backing the project. The involvement of the Chinese tech giant hadn’t been widely publicized before, and the disclosure has prompted questions about the scale of investment.
Fortunately, the game servers are still online. But with layoffs, dropping player numbers, and an offline website, uncertainty hangs over the project’s future. It remains to be seen whether Highguard joins the growing list of short-lived live-service experiments or survives.
