Recently, Microsoft warned that if you install Windows 11 on an unsupported device, you risk voiding the manufacturer’s warranty and you won’t receive any updates.
Well, if you’re in this situation, the new Windows 11 feature called Fix problems using Windows Update won’t work for you either. The software giant started testing it since last year starting with a Canary channel build which is now available in the 22631.
How does Fix problems using Windows Update works?
In a recent guide published on a Microsoft Support blog page, the Redmond giant explains how this new feature works:
Fix problems using Windows Update is a recovery tool that can help resolve issues related to updates. Using this tool will reinstall the current version of Windows on your device. This tool preserves all your apps, documents, and settings. Make sure to keep your PC connected to a power source and the internet during reinstallation.
So, if a Windows 11 update fails, Microsoft recommends using the Fix problems using Windows Update app which will basically reinstall the OS. However, it will keep all your apps and settings in the process.
You can tick the box if you want to automatically restart your system 15 minutes after the process is complete, or restart your system manually.
This feature is available in Windows 11 by accessing Settings > System > Recovery and clicking the Reinstall now button under Fix problems using Windows Update.
Microsoft also warns that this feature might not show up if the PC is managed by your work organization or the school. The option might be missing as well if you’re running a version of Windows that’s earlier than Windows 11 with the 2022 annual update.
You’ll also need the February 2024 optional update, or a later update installed on the PC.
The Fix problems using Windows Update app is clearly a welcomed and useful way to restore your PC to normal functionality. However, reinstalling your OS due to a failing Windows 11 update sounds a bit extreme.
Leaving aside the fact that a Windows update shouldn’t fail in the first place, there should be an easier and less invasive way of fixing it. To be fair, this option can be also used to fix system corruption issues affecting your PC.
