3. Reset the SMC and NVRAM

  1. Turn off your MacBook.
  2. Press and hold left Control, left Option, and right Shift.
  3. Keep the keys pressed for 7 seconds. Without releasing the keys, press and hold the Power button.
  4. Keep all four keys pressed about 7 seconds.
  5. Release the keys and start your MacBook.

If your MacBook doesn’t have the T2 chip the process is slightly different:

  1. Shut down your MacBook.
  2. Hold left Shift, left Control, and left Option.
  3. Without releasing the keys, press and hold the Power button.
  4. Keep all four keys pressed for about 10 seconds.
  5. Release the keys and start your MacBook.

To reset NVRAM, do the following:

  1. Turn off your Mac and turn it back on.
  2. Hold the following keys: Option, Command, P, and R.
  3. Keep the four keys pressed until:
    • You hear the startup sound for the second time – on non-T2 chip models
    • You see the Apple logo appear and disappear for the second time – on T2 chip models
