Microsoft Adds “Make Print Screen Key Yieldable” Policy to Windows 11

Microsoft recently introduced Local Group Policy support for GPP debug logging, but that’s not the only policy change. According to Windows Latest, Windows 11 Build 26300 includes a new Group Policy called “Make Print Screen key yieldable.”

The policy gives users and admins more control over how the Print Screen (PrntScr) key behaves.

New Policy Lets Apps Override the Print Screen Key

By default, pressing the Print Screen key opens the Snipping Tool or the built-in screen capture interface.

With the new policy, third-party apps can intercept and override the shortcut. If left as Not configured (the default state), apps can take control of the Print Screen key.

If you enable the policy, apps are allowed to override the default screenshot behavior. If you disable the policy, Windows forces legacy behavior and blocks apps from hijacking the key.

A full system reboot is required for any changes to apply. The new policy appears in the following path:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer

It requires Group Policy Editor, meaning it’s available on Windows 11 Pro and higher editions.

Replacing the Old Accessibility Toggle

Back in 2023, Microsoft added a toggle under Keyboard settings, and it was labeled “Use the Print Screen key to open Snipping Tool.”

That setting has effectively disappeared in newer Windows 11 versions, such as 24H2 and 25H2. Interestingly, Snipping Tool still directs users to Accessibility settings, even though the specific option no longer exists.

The new Group Policy provides a more direct and granular way to manage screenshot shortcut behavior, especially for enterprise environments. Microsoft is currently testing and rolling out this policy in preview builds, so we might see it available soon.

In other news, Microsoft has also released the Canary update KB5077240, alongside KB5077242 and KB5077243 for the Beta and Dev channels.
