Windows 11 Adds Local Group Policy Support for GPP Debug Logging

windows 11 KB5074169

Microsoft has announced a handy feature improvement for IT admins with the February 2026 Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Here, we are talking about Group Policy Preferences (GPP) debug logging, which can now be enabled directly through Local Group Policy. This eliminates the long-standing requirement to configure these settings through domain-based Group Policy Objects (GPOs).

Previously, admins troubleshooting Group Policy Preferences client-side extensions (CSEs) had to depend on domain controllers or centralized GPO management to activate verbose logging. With this update, logging and tracing can now be configured locally using the Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc), streamlining diagnostics on standalone or domain-joined devices alike.

The new capability allows administrators to enable logging for individual preference CSEs such as Drive Maps, Files, Shortcuts, and Printers. IT pros can define event logging levels, Informational, Warnings, Errors, or All, enable trace logging, specify log file locations, and configure maximum file sizes to prevent rapid rollover.

By default, trace logs are stored in:

%COMMONAPPDATA%\GroupPolicy\Preference\Trace

This path maps physically to:

%SYSTEMDRIVE%\ProgramData\Microsoft\

If a custom folder is used, the SYSTEM account must have Full Control permissions. Since GPP CSEs run under the Local System context, missing permissions will prevent logs from being created.

Microsoft sauys that this eventually reduces dependency on domain infrastructure and simplifies troubleshooting workflows. For admins who regularly diagnose Group Policy Preferences issues, local debug logging provides faster, more flexible analysis directly on client devices.
