As you might all know already, apparently, according to Trump (via BBC), Microsoft is in talks to buy TikTok after the app was granted a 75-day reprieve for the ban that had over 170 million users in the US suddenly being unable to access the social media network for more than 12 hours, a week ago.
Trump made the statement earlier this week, and both Microsoft and ByteDance – the company behind TikTok – have not commented yet,
But let’s entertain the idea: what if Microsoft does buy TikTok?
In the US, TikTok is already taking the social media sphere by storm. It’s incredibly popular, and with over 170 million users in the country, TikTok has become the go-to platform for entertainment, news, and so on, coming very close to Meta’s Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp, and Google’s YouTube. Actually, according to the latest stats, TikTok is the fifth most used platform in the world, not only in the US, and it’s catching up by the month.
Considering Microsoft ends up buying TikTok, the company might be able to use the platform to boost its existing services, such as Bing Search. Bing Search is the main competitor to Google Search, and it has been rising in popularity for the last few years due to its quest to decentralize the search engine market.
Integrating Bing Search within TikTok, or vice versa, is similar to what Google has done with Reddit, for example. It would considerably boost it to surpass Google, even without the need to force it on users.
Aside from Bing Search, a possible TikTok acquisition by Microsoft would also spark some hope for the now-retired Windows Phone OS. The acquisition might encourage Microsoft to return to the mobile phone market with a new and improved operating system that relies on AI and, why not, TikTok.
It will also give Microsoft a more assertive stance in the social media industry. I mean, LinkedIn is fine, but is it? Is this the best Microsoft can do?
So now that we have entertained the idea, we can only wait and see. However, if Microsoft decides to do it, it could be very interesting for Meta and Google.
