Microsoft Confirms Windows 11 Update Bug Blocking Security Updates Since March
Some PCs missed two months of Windows 11 security updates
Microsoft has confirmed a Windows 11 bug that prevents some users from downloading updates through the Settings app. The issue, tracked internally as WI1311742, causes Windows Update to fail with error 0x80010002 on affected devices.
The problem first appeared after the March 2026 Patch Tuesday update and may also affect later cumulative updates released in April and May 2026. Microsoft says the issue specifically impacts update downloads through Windows Update in Settings, not the ability of Windows itself to install updates.
Windows 11 users may have missed months of security updates
The issue was first linked to KB5079473, the March 2026 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11. According to Microsoft, devices affected by WI1311742 may fail to download any newer cumulative updates released afterward.
This matters because some affected systems could now be missing several months of security patches. Users may also miss recently introduced Secure Boot certificate updates, which are becoming increasingly important as older certificates approach expiration.
Microsoft recently started deploying Secure Boot certificate changes that add a new SecureBoot folder used for future certificate updates. Devices blocked by this Windows Update issue may not receive those files automatically.
Microsoft says timeout changes caused the issue
Microsoft explained that the bug is related to changes in Windows Update download timeout requirements. The company says the issue does not indicate corruption, device integrity problems, or broken Windows installations.
Instead, the bug affects how Windows Update handles downloads from Microsoft’s servers through the Settings app.
Microsoft also noted that many affected PCs were still able to install the February 2026 security update before the problem started appearing in March.
Another Windows update issue is also affecting users
This is not the only Windows 11 update problem currently impacting users. Microsoft recently acknowledged installation issues affecting KB5089549 after many users reported failed installs and update loops.
The company has already shared a temporary workaround for KB5089549 while it investigates a permanent fix.
Because the current Windows Update bug blocks newer updates entirely, affected devices may also miss these important certificate changes until Microsoft resolves the issue.
