Microsoft Confirms Windows 11's New Internet Speed Test Was Built With AI in Just One Day
Microsoft has revealed that Windows 11’s new native internet speed test was developed using agentic AI, with much of the work guided by a single person during their spare time.
The feature recently appeared in Windows 11 Insider Experimental Build 26340.9767, giving users a built-in way to check their internet connection speed.
Microsoft’s new internet speed test started with user feedback
According to Marcus Ash, Microsoft’s design and research executive for Windows and Devices, the company developed the feature after receiving requests for an integrated internet speed testing tool.
Microsoft first introduced an internet speed test prototype in April 2026. That version used Ookla technology through a Bing-based experience rather than a fully native Windows utility.
Following user feedback, Microsoft worked on a native version with an interface that matches Windows 11.
Ash explained that Pavan Davuluri asked Microsoft’s design team to explore the idea, and Diego Baca managed to create a working prototype in just one day.
Microsoft’s connectivity team then worked with partners to integrate the functionality into Windows.
Agentic AI helped Microsoft build the feature faster
According to Ash, the development process relied heavily on agentic AI, with one person guiding much of the work during their spare time.
He highlighted how agentic AI and tools such as WinUI 3 can help developers create native Windows applications much faster.
The approach allowed Microsoft’s team to move from user feedback to a working prototype in a single day, before bringing in additional teams to complete the integration.
The new internet speed test also shows how Microsoft is using AI beyond Copilot and other user-facing features, applying it directly to Windows development.
In other news, Windows 11 KB5127936 adds a new Restore Summary feature to simplify PC migration. Microsoft has also made Windows 11 26H2 available to all eligible PCs, including supported Windows 10 devices.
