Windows 11 Gets Built-In Internet Speed Test Powered by Ookla in KB5083769

Integrated in Windows 11, but not fully native

Microsoft has started rolling out a built-in internet speed test in Windows 11, giving users a faster way to check connection performance without opening a browser. The feature arrives with the April 2026 update (KB5083769) and integrates directly into the operating system.

Built-in speed test powered by Ookla

The new feature relies on Ookla Speedtest, one of the most widely used internet performance testing platforms. Instead of visiting a website or installing a separate app, users can now access the tool directly from Windows. Microsoft placed entry points inside the taskbar network icon and Quick Settings, including Wi-Fi and cellular controls, so the test feels like a native part of the system.

What the feature measures

The built-in tool allows users to check download and upload speeds along with latency and jitter. This makes it useful for identifying slow connections, unstable performance, or general network issues without leaving the desktop environment.

How the feature works

Even though the experience feels integrated, it still runs through a web-based interface powered by Bing. Microsoft uses the Speedtest Web SDK and connects to Ookla’s global testing infrastructure. The key difference lies in speed and convenience, as users no longer need to search for a speed test manually.

Rollout timeline

Microsoft first introduced the feature to Insider builds in September 2025, then expanded availability through the optional February 2026 update (KB5077241). With the April 2026 Patch Tuesday update (KB5083769), the company has now pushed the feature to a much wider group of users.

Why this matters

This addition highlights Microsoft’s broader push to make Windows more self-contained. By embedding commonly used tools directly into the operating system, the company reduces reliance on third-party apps and simplifies everyday troubleshooting. Users can now quickly verify network performance without interrupting their workflow.

Despite the tighter integration, the speed test still launches a web instance rather than a fully native Windows component. This suggests Microsoft may refine the feature further in future updates and eventually replace the web-based layer with a native experience.
