In what is seen as a welcome step by many, Microsoft now allows users to set Copilot as the default digital assistant app on Android. Previously, it was usually Google Assistant, Bixby, or the manufacturer’s native app that occupied the position.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Mishaal Rahman reports that with Copilot’s Android beta app version 27.9.420225014, you can quickly set Copilot as the default assistant.
To set Microsoft Copilot as the default digital assistant app on Android, open Settings > go to Apps > tap on Choose default apps > select Digital assistant app > choose Device assistance app > pick Copilot from the list > tap on OK to confirm.
Once set, to open Microsoft Copilot, you just need to drag diagonally from the corner or press and hold the Power button.
Though, in its present form, the functionality of Microsoft Copilot as the default assistant is somewhat limited!
Launching Copilot simply brings up the main activity, and the AI-based chatbot doesn’t automatically listen to audio input or capture a screengrab of the on-screen content. But, these features could soon be released in the subsequent versions of Copilot on Android.
We have our hopes up since Microsoft has been aggressively working on Copilot, making improvements, adding new features, and introducing user-oriented functionalities across its products.
This could be Microsoft’s attempt to capture the Android ecosystem, which has always been ruled by Google!
