Microsoft Edge Is Removing Drop File Sharing Feature as Browser Cleanup Continues
Microsoft is continuing to simplify Edge by removing several built-in features, and the latest casualty is Drop, the browser’s cross-device file-sharing tool.
According to Windows Latest, Microsoft is retiring the Drop feature from Edge. The tool allowed users to send files, images, and text between devices signed into the same Microsoft account. It worked across Windows PCs, Android devices, and iPhones, using OneDrive storage behind the scenes.
Drop became a convenient alternative to services such as Phone Link, allowing users to quickly transfer files or notes from a desktop PC to a mobile device without leaving the browser.
Edge Canary Confirms Drop Retirement
The latest Edge Canary builds now display a warning informing users that Drop is being retired. Microsoft has also introduced a new “Download text” button, giving users a way to export any notes stored in Drop before the feature disappears.
Users who do not save their notes before the shutdown may lose access to text previously shared through the service.
Microsoft has not yet announced an exact removal date, but the warning suggests the feature will disappear in a future Edge update.
Another Feature Leaving Edge
Drop is not the only feature facing removal. Microsoft has also been scaling back other Edge components, including the Sidebar and Collections.
Microsoft has increasingly positioned Copilot as the centerpiece of its software strategy. As a result, several traditional Edge features are being phased out in favor of a more AI-centric experience.
Whether users welcome the changes remains to be seen, but the retirement of Drop marks another step in Microsoft’s ongoing transformation of Edge.
Edge Also Gains Google Account Sign-In Support
In separate Edge news, Microsoft is finally adding support for signing into the browser using a Google Account. The change should make it easier for users who primarily rely on Google’s ecosystem while still using Microsoft Edge as their main browser.
The feature is currently rolling out through preview versions and is expected to reach more users in upcoming updates, according to Microsoft Edge is finally getting Google Account sign-in support.
