Microsoft Edge is about to get much faster, as Microsoft updated it to support AVIF and AV1 file formats, according to the latest update package available in the Edge Beta channel.

The Redmond-based tech giant debuted the feature in Edge Beta 121.0.2277.49, which means it will be live and running in the stable Edge in a couple of weeks.

The added support for AVIF and AV1 means that Edge will be able to process higher-quality images and videos better, effectively making the browser faster to use.

Users on Edge Beta can already update their browser to support the AVIF and AV1 file formats, but you should be aware of the fact that Edge Beta 121 also introduced a new way to update the browser.

Updating Edge will be possible through the new Browser Essentials panel, which was introduced in 121, and features all the available updates for the browser. The new Browser Essential panel was released back in December, but Microsoft said it’s in a controlled rollout.

However, users should be able to see it by now.

Speaking of higher-quality images, Copilot on Microsoft Edge will let users add screenshots to the AI tool inside the browser. Once uploaded, Copilot will analyze the images provided to it and will come back to users with personalized inputs about these images.

Copilot is a pretty useful tool to have on Microsoft Edge, which gives the browser the edge it needs over its competitors. For example, it can generate page summaries, perform searches, and answer questions related to the pages users are visiting.Microsoft Edge AVIF AV1

Microsoft Edge is already on par with Google Chrome when it comes to performance, however, the browser is still far behind Chrome when it comes to popularity. However, Microsoft is keen on releasing updates for it, despite the lack of popularity.

If you, however, would like to take a break from Chrome, for whatever reason, Microsoft Edge could be the best next solution. Plus, an AI tool at your disposal is always a useful thing to have.
