Microsoft Explains PowerShell LTS Delay After Complex Release Issues
Microsoft has acknowledged delays in the release of PowerShell 7.6 LTS, citing a series of technical and logistical challenges that slowed development and final delivery. The company said the release process proved more complex than expected, especially given PowerShell’s cross-platform scope.
A complex release pipeline across platforms
Each PowerShell release involves a demanding pipeline with nearly 29 packages across eight formats. It supports four architectures, including x64 and Arm64, and runs on eight operating systems. In total, Microsoft executes more than 287,000 tests per release cycle to ensure stability.
Timeline of issues that caused delays
The delay dates back to October 2025, when a packaging bug broke Alpine Linux builds. In November, new compliance rules slowed down fixes, followed by a December holiday freeze that paused progress. January introduced glibc compatibility issues on RHEL 8, while February focused on extended validation and fixes before the release stabilized in March 2026.
Root cause: packaging and compatibility challenges
Microsoft said packaging changes became more complex than expected. Cross-platform compatibility issues added further complications, creating a chain of delays that required deeper changes to the release process.
To recover, Microsoft rebuilt packaging workflows across RPM, DEB, and PKG formats. The company prioritized reliability over speed and aligned release branches to improve coordination and reduce inconsistencies.
What Microsoft is changing going forward
Microsoft plans to introduce clearer ownership of releases and improve internal tracking. It will increase automation, deliver more consistent preview builds, and detect risks earlier in development. The company admitted that the lack of early warning signals significantly contributed to the delay.
In other news, Microsoft recently released the Canary update KB5079490 and teased long-awaited Taskbar customization features in Windows 11. The company is also testing new sponsored labels in Bing Search.
