Microsoft Fixes Windows 11 File Sharing With New Drop Tray Experience

Now in Release Preview, with wider rollout expected in May 2026

drop tray changes

Microsoft is renaming Windows 11’s Drag Tray to Drop Tray and redesigning it to feel less intrusive when users drag files near the top of the screen.

The updated feature is currently available in the Release Preview channel, with a wider rollout expected in May 2026. Windows Latest reports that Microsoft has made the tray smaller, cleaner, and easier to dismiss after complaints that the previous version appeared too easily during normal desktop use.

Drop Tray redesign focuses on usability

Drop Tray now uses a smaller peek view and removes instruction labels, giving it a more subtle appearance. The feature still appears when users drag files toward the top of the screen, but it now behaves more like the Snap Layout bar, activating only when the action feels intentional.

The previous Drag Tray could interfere with users who kept folders near the top of the desktop. In some cases, the sharing interface appeared while users were simply trying to move files into those folders.

Behavior changes reduce interference with desktop workflow

Microsoft has changed that behavior. Drop Tray no longer blocks desktop folders and now sits above them instead of covering them. This should make file sharing feel more natural while reducing accidental triggers.

Microsoft is also moving the feature’s settings. The old location was Settings > System > Nearby Sharing, but users will now find Drop Tray under Settings > System > Multitasking.

The change matters because it fixes a common workflow complaint without removing the sharing feature entirely. It also shows Microsoft refining Windows 11 around touch, gestures, and drag-based interactions.

In other Windows news, Microsoft is rolling out an improved Windows Update experience that gives users more control. The Windows Insider Program is also getting a new Experimental channel, which will replace Dev.
