Microsoft is giving Copilot a major makeover, and this time it goes far beyond another chatbot upgrade. The company has introduced a new Copilot experience built around Home, Code and Autopilot to bring chat, coding, Office work and autonomous AI agents into one place.

The new experience is being rolled out through Microsoft’s Frontier program, with Home and Code arriving in the coming weeks. Autopilot, meanwhile, is expanding into private preview at the end of September.

Microsoft Copilot now has a Home for all your work

Home becomes the new starting point for Copilot, bringing Chat and Cowork together. Microsoft says users will be able to review recent activity, pick up unfinished work and ask Copilot to handle everything from quick questions to larger projects.

Microsoft is also putting Word, Excel and PowerPoint directly inside Copilot. Users can create or edit real documents, spreadsheets and presentations without constantly jumping between apps, while changes stay synced with the traditional Office applications. Then there is Code.

Code lets users describe an app, dashboard, tracker, automation or workflow in natural language and have Copilot build it. The feature uses the same underlying technology as GitHub Copilot and runs inside a sandboxed environment.

Microsoft is also giving Copilot an Autopilot mode

Autopilot is arguably the wildest part of the announcement. Previously known as Scout, the feature acts as a persistent digital teammate that can continue working without waiting for another prompt.

Users can give Autopilot a name, role and goal, then let it monitor channels, follow up on conversations, handle recurring work or continue projects days later. It can operate across Teams, Outlook, chats, channels and documents while remaining inside the organization’s tenant with permissions, auditing and governance controls.

Microsoft is also adding deeper business context through Microsoft IQ, a unified plugin registry and new FinOps tools for managing AI spending. And Microsoft isn’t stopping there. A new Today experience is coming to Copilot in October, designed to surface what users missed, what needs attention and even move some tasks forward automatically.

In other Copilot news, Microsoft is testing tabbed browsing in Copilot, while Google is promoting the Copilot app on its new laptops. Meanwhile, Microsoft has reportedly dropped the Copilot+ PC branding.
