Microsoft Pushes Reliability-First Update for Azure Database for MySQL

Microsoft has announced a new January 2026 update for Microsoft Azure Database for MySQL (Flexible Server), continuing its broader push toward tighter Azure monitoring and platform standardization.

As reported by Neowin, Microsoft will automatically onboard all newly created Azure Database for MySQL Flexible Server instances to this update. Existing servers will receive it during their next scheduled maintenance window.

Azure MySQL gets a reliability-first update from Microsoft

Microsoft designed this release around reliability rather than new capabilities, according to the release notes. The company confirmed that the update introduces no new engine versions and no additional features. Instead, it delivers security patches and high-priority infrastructure bug fixes.

One of the most important fixes targets disaster recovery. Microsoft resolved an issue where GTID reset operations failed after administrators enabled geo-backups, which previously affected recovery reliability.

Key fixes for high availability and networking

The update also addresses problems tied to High Availability configurations:

  • Microsoft fixed a bug that prevented some HA servers behind a Dedicated Service Load Balancer from enabling Private Endpoints.
  • Administrators now receive clearer error messages when enabling HA on VNET-based instances that still use Accelerated Logs, making troubleshooting faster and more predictable.

Server administrators don’t need to take manual action for deployment, as Azure applies the update automatically. However, Microsoft recommends reviewing maintenance schedules and monitoring systems closely after rollout, especially for HA and geo-backup configurations.

Beyond MySQL, Azure continues to see rapid changes. A recent Windows update, KB5074109, disrupted Azure Virtual Desktop connections, but Microsoft has already released an emergency fix to address that issue.
