Microsoft Relaunches 2025 Surface Pro and Surface Laptop With 8GB RAM, Yet Prices Remain High
Memory prices have been climbing for months, component costs remain under pressure, and PC makers are still looking for ways to keep entry prices from spiraling even higher. Microsoft’s latest Surface move appears to be a direct response to that reality, though some buyers may not like how the company chose to solve the problem.
The company has quietly introduced new 8GB versions of its Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch, creating lower-priced entry points while keeping the same Snapdragon X Plus processor and 256GB SSD storage.
Microsoft finds a new way to lower the starting price
On paper, the move sounds straightforward. The new Surface Pro now starts at $849.99, while the Surface Laptop carries a starting price of $949.99.
The catch becomes obvious when comparing them to the original launch configurations. Earlier this year, both devices debuted with 16GB of memory, starting at $799 for the Surface Pro and $899 for the Surface Laptop. Since then, pricing has increased significantly, with current 16GB models now climbing above the $1,000 mark.
Rather than bringing those prices back down, Microsoft has effectively lowered the entry point by reducing memory capacity.
Less memory also means no Copilot+ branding
The RAM reduction creates another consequence. These new models no longer qualify as Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft currently requires at least 16GB of memory for Copilot+ certification, meaning buyers of the new 8GB variants lose access to the same collection of local AI-powered experiences available on higher-end Surface systems.
That being said, Microsoft is still marketing the new devices as suitable for everyday workloads such as browsing, schoolwork, office applications, and general productivity tasks. Customers who want heavier multitasking, more demanding applications, or Copilot+ features will still need to move up to the 16GB configurations.
Interestingly, Microsoft isn’t making this change across the entire Surface lineup. The flagship Surface Pro and Surface Laptop families continue to start with 16GB of memory. For now, the new 8GB configurations appear limited to the smaller 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop, effectively serving as a relaunch aimed at bringing the entry price down without redesigning the hardware itself.
