Microsoft Rolls out Windows 11 KB5079471 and KB5079463 Recovery Updates
Microsoft has released a pair of new dynamic updates for Windows 11. The patches, labeled KB5079471 and KB5079463, are specifically designed to improve the Windows Recovery Environment. KB5079471 targets devices running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, while KB5079463 is built for the newer 26H1 version.
The new updates improve the Windows Recovery Environment
The new Windows 11 KB5079471 and KB5079463 releases are dynamic updates. These updates specifically patch the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). They are designed to be applied to existing Windows installation images before they are widely deployed.
This ensures that the foundational recovery tools are completely up to date before the operating system even boots. For IT administrators managing fleets of devices, having an updated recovery image is a necessary step in maintaining a stable network.
The official summary of the new updates is, “This update makes improvements to the Windows recovery environment (WinRE).” Notably, these updates have arrived soon after Microsoft released the Windows 11 KB5079473 patch Tuesday update, which is related to crashes and install errors.
The recovery updates will be installed automatically
You do not need to do anything to install these updates. Microsoft is distributing both KB5079471 and KB5079463 directly through the standard Windows Update channel. They will download and install automatically in the background. Once the patches are applied, your system will not even require a reboot.
Don’t forget, Microsoft recently also rolled out a bunch of new Insider program updates, including the one that brings improvements to the driver policy. Also, there’s another one that offers a better Windows Setup experience.
If you want to verify the installation, you can check your WinRE version using the command line. Devices running the 24H2 or 25H2 update should show version 10.0.26100.8031. Those on the newer 26H1 release will see version 10.0.28000.1701.
