windows 11 KB5044284

Back in October, when Microsoft released the KB5044284 update for Windows 11, users reported an issue: the patch wouldn’t let them install further Windows security updates if the patch was installed using a media kit, such as a CD or USB flash drive.

The Redmond-based tech giant noticed the issue and acknowledged it, and the company said it was working on a fix.

However, the Redmond-based tech giant thinks this is a solution because the issue does not occur when the October or November 2024 security updates are installed via Windows Update or the Microsoft Update Catalog. Other than avoiding installing Windows 11, version 24H2, using media that installs the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates, no other workarounds should be provided.

The company has labeled this issue resolved and has moved on, leaving those Windows 11 users who want to install the operating system with the KB5044284 update without a real solution.

Resolution: To prevent this issue, do not install Windows 11, version 24H2, using media that installs the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates. If a device becomes unable to receive further updates as a result of this issue, it can be remediated by re-installing Windows 11, version 24H2, using media that instead includes the December 2024 monthly security update (released December 10, 2024) or later.

Ultimately, you should avoid installing this version of Windows 11 24H2 this way and probably move on, as well. Microsoft definitely has moved on.
