Microsoft Teams Glitch Makes Users Unsearchable and Unreachable

Issue started on April 8, leaving some users unable to chat or call

Microsoft is investigating a bug affecting Microsoft Teams Free users that prevents some from chatting or calling others. The issue leaves profiles showing as “Unknown users,” making them unsearchable and unreachable across the platform.

Backend change caused onboarding failure

Microsoft says the problem comes from a recent backend change that skipped critical onboarding and privacy consent steps. Because of this, affected accounts remain in an incomplete state and fail to connect properly with others.

According to the company, new users were incorrectly treated as already onboarded. This broke core functionality, including user discovery, connection requests, and chat initiation.

Ongoing issue since early April

The issue was first reported on April 8 and remains unresolved for some users. Microsoft has classified it as a service degradation rather than a full outage, which means the platform still works but with limited functionality for impacted accounts.

The company has not confirmed how many users or regions are affected, suggesting the scope is still being assessed.

Fix in progress, more updates expected

Microsoft is actively working on a fix and continues to investigate the root cause. The company expects to provide additional updates as progress continues, but no exact timeline has been shared yet.

The onboarding bug is not the only problem users are facing. Some report that right-click paste no longer works properly, while others experience issues accessing meetings after a recent Microsoft Edge update.

These problems suggest broader compatibility or regression issues following recent updates.

Security concerns add to pressure

At the same time, security researchers warn that threat actors are abusing Microsoft Teams to deploy Snow malware. Attackers reportedly use the platform to trick users into downloading malicious files, which can lead to data theft and system compromise.

The combination of reliability issues and emerging security threats puts additional pressure on Microsoft to stabilize and secure its collaboration service quickly.
