Windows 11 app updates are rolling out for Notepad, Calculator, Clock, and Media Player, with Microsoft focusing on faster performance, reliability improvements, and bug fixes rather than major new features.

The updates are available to Windows Insiders in the Experimental, Beta, and Release Preview channels.

Notepad gets faster launch times and Markdown fixes

Notepad should now open faster following performance improvements included in the latest update.

Microsoft has also improved formatting support for both .md and .markdown files. Copying and pasting indented or nested lists should now preserve their structure more reliably.

The update improves concurrent print jobs across multiple Notepad windows and tabs. Microsoft also fixed an issue that caused underscore characters to display incorrectly.

Media Player improves local album artwork

Media Player now checks album folders for commonly used cover image files before searching online. This change should improve album artwork support for local music files that do not contain embedded cover art.

Disabled libraries now show an explanatory message instead of appearing empty. Microsoft also fixed an issue that could prevent track lists from rendering correctly after users changed the sorting order.

Clock fixes Focus Sessions and sunrise calculations

Completed tasks should no longer disappear from Focus Sessions after installing the latest Clock update.

Microsoft has also improved sunrise and sunset calculations, particularly for users located in high-latitude regions where previous results could lack accuracy.

Calculator improves Scientific mode and accessibility

Pressing Clear or Clear Entry in Scientific mode now resets the notation toggle and returns the display to fixed-point format.

Microsoft fixed a keyboard shortcut conflict between the Clear all history and Clear all memory commands. The company has also improved Calculator support for screen readers.

In other Windows news, Microsoft has released a new Windows 11 Insider Preview Build, while Microsoft 365 Profile Cards will soon display additional employee details.

Researchers have also discovered fake Windows app websites impersonating PowerToys and other popular Windows software.
