Microsoft will enhance Copilot with UX Transparency for Web Queries

Copilot, the popular AI model, will be enhanced with a new capability called UX Transparency for Web Queries. This capability will allow users to see how the model gathers information about the prompts.

When Copilot needs to provide information, it often searches the web for the most accurate and up-to-date data. This process of searching and using web information is called web grounding.

With this enhancement, users can see the specific search terms or phrases that Copilot uses when it looks for information online. For example, if you ask about the latest cricket match, you might see that Copilot searched for “India vs Australia last cricket match.”

Users will also see which websites Copilot checked for information along with the search terms. This could include news sites, official pages, or other reputable sources. This helps users understand where the information is coming from.

With UX transparency of web grounding in Copilot, users will now be able to see the exact queries sent by Copilot in response to a user’s prompt to the web for grounding, along with the list of websites being queried, enhancing their awareness over the process.

By showing both the search queries and the list of websites, users gain a clearer picture of how Copilot works. This transparency can build trust, as you can see if the information is based on real, verifiable sources.

This, in turn, will ensure that Copilot is not used to spread misinformation, fake news, and similar content.

UX Transparency will be previewed in Copilot this month, followed by a rollout in November.
