Microsoft has announced changes to its Teams desktop and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) apps to enforce updates and enhance security and compliance.
Starting in April 2025, versions of the new Teams client released more than 90 days prior will be blocked. Users must update to the latest version or switch to the web version of Teams to continue accessing the platform.
Key dates for the update policy include:
- April 11, 2025: Blocking begins for Windows desktop app users.
- May 6, 2025: Blocking begins for VDI environment users.
- May 15, 2025: Blocking begins for Mac desktop app users.
To ensure users are informed, Microsoft will display an in-app warning banner 60 days before blocking occurs, with VDI users seeing the warning 30 days prior.
Impact and Recommended Actions
Organizations using outdated Teams versions risk app access being blocked, potentially disrupting workflows. Microsoft emphasizes updating the latest Teams version to ensure optimal security and functionality. Administrators are urged to:
- Enable automatic updates for Teams to keep clients within the 90-day compatibility window.
- Configure Microsoft AutoUpdate (MAU) correctly for macOS devices.
- Verify that network and device management settings allow updates.
- Ensure Windows policies do not interfere with updates for Teams or the Webview2 updater.
Microsoft announced it in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center portal.
