Microsoft’s Planner Redesign Cuts iCal Sync and Key Features in 2026
Microsoft continues to expand its productivity ecosystem with new security and collaboration features, including upcoming Impersonation Protection for Microsoft Teams. At the same time, the company is pushing through notable changes to another core product.
Microsoft Planner overhaul removes calendar sync and several long-standing features
As Neowin reports, Microsoft has started rolling out a major overhaul of Microsoft Planner in 2026. The update modernizes the Planner experience across both the web interface and its integration inside Teams.
One of the most impactful changes is the removal of iCalendar feeds. As a result, Planner tasks will no longer sync with external calendar apps such as Outlook or Google Calendar using iCal, cutting off a workflow many users relied on to manage tasks alongside daily schedules.
Microsoft is also introducing a new Task Chat feature that replaces the old comments system. While Task Chat aims to improve collaboration, existing comments will no longer be visible directly on task cards, which may make it harder for teams to reference past discussions.
The overhaul removes additional functionality as well. Microsoft has dropped support for embedding live Planner boards inside Microsoft Loop pages, and the Whiteboard tab is disappearing for Premium plans. These changes reflect a broader shift where older features are being retired as Microsoft pushes newer tools and workflows.
The company is rolling out these updates between mid-January and mid-February, meaning many users may already notice the redesigned Planner experience. With multiple familiar features gone, some users are questioning whether this release feels more like a setback than an upgrade.
In other Microsoft news, Microsoft 365 has recently recovered from a service outage, and the company plans to add watermarks to content generated by Microsoft 365 Copilot.
