Mozilla is stepping up its AI game with a new feature in Firefox. After dropping the “Do Not Track” setting, Firefox is now testing a “Proofread” prompt for AI chatbots in Nightly. This exciting new grammar check and writing feature might be available in Firefox 135.

Mozilla Firefox doesn’t have AI assistants built into the browser like Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Brave, and Opera. However, it is ramping up its efforts to bring more useful features and tools powered by AI such as creating alt text for images in PDFs and identifying AI generated text.

Firefox already supports AI chatbots like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and others for summarizing, explaining, and simplifying text. Now, Mozilla aims to help students and professionals by adding a Proofreading prompt for these chatbots.

Firefox getting AI-powered Proofreading feature to improve writing

Whether you’re drafting an important email, working on an essay, or just want to ensure your social media posts are error-free, the new “Writing & Grammar Check feature” in Firefox is here to help.

The “Proofread” option (subject to change) helps users quickly produce polished, error-free written content. Integrated into Firefox’s AI Chatbot Prompts, it allows you to improve your writing without spending too much time on editing and reviewing.

How to test Firefox’s new Writing & Grammar Check Feature

  1. Go to Settings > Firefox Labs > Enable “AI Chatbot” and “Show Prompts on Text Select.”
  2. Highlight the text you want to proofread.
  3. Choose the Proofread Prompt
  4. Review and apply Suggestions displayed in the Sidebar to improve your text.

This feature is still under development and isn’t available by default. However, we’ve enabled and tested it with Google Gemini and ChatGPT, and it works well. We haven’t tested other AI chatbots since they also require signing into their respective services.

Apart from this, Mozilla is also testing an experiment that allows users to set Firefox as the default browser on Windows easily.
