Many Windows 11 users who have updated to the latest version, 22H2, have been experiencing a drop in gaming performance since updating. The culprit, according to Microsoft, is that “Affected games and apps are inadvertently enabling GPU performance debugging features not meant to be used by consumers.”

Microsoft had previously blocked the update for systems with affected games, but now it seems to have implemented a full fix, which is available in the preview of the latest monthly update (see here for the full release notes). Check Windows Update for the KB5020044 update preview which you can install to get the game performance fix if any of your games have been affected by the 22H2 gaming issues.

The update also fixes issues that caused some apps to become unresponsive. Also, turning off certain security features that previously hampered gaming performance should no longer be necessary.
