The latest Xbox Ally update reportedly adds new console-style system sound effects, which give the handheld a more familiar Xbox Series X|S feel when navigating menus and the Xbox PC app.

The news comes via Windows Central, citing Jez Corden’s findings, which he shared on X earlier today. The update is currently rolling out to Windows Insiders. While the changes aren’t massive on paper, early impressions suggest the Xbox Ally’s interface feels snappier overall, with smoother navigation and more responsive interactions.

One of the notable features is the new audio feedback when moving through menus. These sound effects closely mirror what players are used to on Xbox consoles, helping the Ally feel less like a Windows PC and more like a dedicated Xbox device. If that’s not your thing, Microsoft has made sure the feature is optional. Users can lower the volume or disable the sounds entirely through settings.

The update appears to go beyond the handheld itself. The Verge’s Tom Warren has shared the same sound effects appearing in the Xbox PC app, hinting at Microsoft’s effort to standardize the Xbox experience across platforms. More importantly, the sounds only trigger when using a controller or a handheld device, so mouse and keyboard users won’t hear them during normal navigation.

While the update is limited to Insider builds for now, it’s expected to roll out more widely later this month if testing goes smoothly.
