Nintendo Says 61.5% of Software Sales Are Now Digital

Nintendo digital sales now account for 61.5% of total software purchases, showing that more players are choosing downloads over physical games.

The figure comes from Nintendo’s August 6 financial earnings report for the first quarter of FY27. Digital purchases represented 59.3% of software sales in the previous quarter, meaning the share increased by 2.2 percentage points.

Nintendo’s digital revenue nearly doubled

Nintendo generated ¥132.7 billion from digital sales during the latest quarter, compared with ¥69.8 billion in the previous quarter.

That represents an increase of roughly 90% quarter-on-quarter. Nintendo said stronger sales of downloadable versions of packaged games helped drive year-on-year growth, while the weaker Japanese yen also increased reported revenue.

Switch ecosystem continues to expand

The shift comes as Nintendo benefits from a large active user base across its hardware ecosystem.

Switch 2 has already sold more than 23 million units, giving Nintendo a substantial audience for both physical and downloadable games.

Software sales also remain strong. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream surpassed 8 million units sold as of August 5, 2026, while Pokopia became Nintendo’s best-selling Pokémon spin-off title.

Physical games remain part of Nintendo’s strategy

Nintendo has not indicated that it plans to abandon physical releases, but its latest figures show a steady shift toward digital distribution.

The wider industry is moving in the same direction, with Sony retiring disc games in 2028 and reporting that 82% of PlayStation game sales were digital.

Physical media will likely remain important for Nintendo, but digital sales could take an increasingly central role if the current trend continues.
