Nintendo Switch 2 Dominates Japan Sales With 3.7 Million Units Sold
Nintendo Switch 2 continues to post impressive sales numbers, and reports suggest Nintendo may already plan additional Switch 2 models.
According to GamesIndustry, sales data from Famitsu shows the Switch 2 sold around 3.7 million units in Japan during 2025. That figure represents more than half of all home console sales in the country for the year.
The original Nintendo Switch placed second with 1.52 million units sold, highlighting how quickly consumers shifted to the new hardware generation.
Switch 2 sales show Nintendo’s strength at home
The strong performance reinforces Nintendo’s dominance in its home market. The Switch 2 launched in June 2025 and quickly became one of Nintendo’s fastest-selling consoles to date.
Early global figures also point to record-breaking momentum. The system sold millions of units worldwide shortly after release, outperforming previous Nintendo console launches during comparable periods.
New Switch 2 models may be in development
Following this sales success, industry chatter suggests Nintendo could work on additional Switch 2 variants, potentially including revised hardware or alternative configurations. Nintendo has not confirmed these plans, but past console cycles show the company often refreshes successful systems.
Despite the momentum, Nintendo has faced criticism over the new Joy-Con 2 color options, with some fans voicing disappointment online. At the same time, Nintendo released its Year in Review 2025, giving Switch owners a detailed look at their gaming habits.
With strong sales and ongoing discussion around hardware updates, the Switch 2 remains central to Nintendo’s strategy heading into the next year.
