OpenAI Launches Surprise Promotion With Free ChatGPT Plus Access

Despite reports that OpenAI could face losses of up to $14 billion this year, the company continues to push new initiatives. Alongside work on its first dedicated AI device, OpenAI has quietly launched a limited-time promotion for ChatGPT users.

ChatGPT Plus goes free for selected accounts

As spotted by BleepingComputer, OpenAI currently offers the ChatGPT Plus subscription for free to a small group of users. The plan usually costs $20 per month in the U.S.

The offer does not apply to all accounts. Only selected users can activate it through a special promotional link shown in their ChatGPT interface or email.

OpenAI subscription tiers explained

OpenAI now structures ChatGPT access across three main plans:

  • ChatGPT Go at $8 per month
  • ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month
  • ChatGPT Pro at $200 per month

Earlier promotions focused on giving existing Plus subscribers an extra free month. This new deal marks the first time OpenAI has extended free Plus access to a broader set of users.

The timing of the promotion matters. OpenAI plans to introduce ads into the ChatGPT Free and Go plans, which could change how casual users experience the service.

At the same time, the company continues to test new task automation and workflow tools. A recent update also improved ChatGPT’s memory features, allowing the assistant to better retain user preferences across conversations.

For users eligible for the free Plus offer, the promotion provides a chance to test advanced features before ads arrive on lower-tier plans.
