OpenAI Reportedly Considering Legal Action Against Apple Over ChatGPT Integration

Apple’s ChatGPT integration reportedly disappointed OpenAI

OpenAI is reportedly exploring possible legal action against Apple over the company’s ChatGPT integration on iPhone, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

The dispute allegedly centers around expectations tied to the AI partnership announced during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. At the event, Apple revealed that ChatGPT would integrate with Siri to help power more advanced AI responses while Apple continued developing its delayed next-generation Siri platform.

OpenAI reportedly unhappy with adoption results

According to the report, OpenAI expected the integration to drive a major increase in ChatGPT sign-ups, subscriptions, and overall adoption inside Apple’s ecosystem.

However, sources reportedly claim the partnership failed to generate the business impact OpenAI anticipated. The company allegedly believes Apple’s implementation made ChatGPT features difficult for users to discover and understand.

The report also claims OpenAI attempted to renegotiate parts of the partnership, though discussions reportedly failed to move forward in a meaningful way.

Apple is reportedly growing cautious about OpenAI

At the same time, Apple reportedly has growing concerns about OpenAI itself.

Apple is increasingly wary of OpenAI’s privacy practices and its expanding hardware ambitions. OpenAI reportedly continues exploring AI-powered consumer hardware products, including smart glasses and potential smartphone alternatives that could arrive as early as the first half of 2027.

That could eventually position OpenAI as a direct competitor to Apple in the hardware market.

Apple may reduce OpenAI’s role on iPhone

Apple has already confirmed that future Siri upgrades may support multiple AI providers, including Gemini from Google.

The company is reportedly considering a broader system that would allow users to choose between different AI services. If that happens, OpenAI could lose its exclusive AI positioning within Apple’s ecosystem.

The reported tensions highlight how rapidly partnerships in the AI industry are evolving as major companies race to secure both platform control and long-term user adoption.
