Microsoft has quietly rolled out a small but much-needed usability upgrade to its Outlook app for Android and iOS. You can now customize the toolbar you use to interact with emails.
For years, core actions like deleting, replying, or archiving sat in the top-right corner, forcing users—especially on larger phones—to stretch their thumbs to reach them. With this update, the toolbar shifts to the bottom of the screen, making it easier to interact with messages one-handed.
When you open an email now, the most common actions appear at the bottom. Want to change what shows up? Tap the three-dot “More options” button, hit Reorder, then drag and drop your preferred actions onto the main toolbar. Your chosen layout stays consistent across all your accounts.
That said, there are a few caveats. The layout might adjust based on your phone’s screen size or orientation. If things don’t fit, some buttons move into the overflow menu. And yes, you might notice a few more grayed-out actions than before. Microsoft says it’s intentional to keep features visible even when they’re not usable at that moment.
The update is rolling out now for anyone on Build 4.2522.0 or later on Android, and Build 4.2522 on iOS. This change might feel small, but for regular Outlook users, it’s the kind of quality-of-life tweak that makes daily use a little less frustrating.
