Microsoft is developing a new AI model for Outlook Search that aims to deliver more accurate and relevant email search results.

According to Microsoft’s announcement, the company is testing a small language model (SLM) internally, with early results showing promise.

Unlike conversational AI tools, the new model won’t allow users to search their inboxes using natural-language requests. Instead, it will improve how Outlook ranks existing search results.

Microsoft’s new AI model aims to improve Outlook Search accuracy

The new model will work as an AI-powered search ranker, helping Outlook identify which emails best match a user’s search query and prioritize them in the results.

Microsoft is developing the model using a technique called model distillation, which allows a smaller AI model to learn from a larger one.

This approach helps the smaller model perform a specific task efficiently without requiring the computing resources of a larger AI system.

For Outlook users, this could mean finding relevant emails more easily, particularly when a search returns multiple messages with similar keywords.

Microsoft says internal testing has produced promising results, but the company hasn’t announced when the new search model will become publicly available.

Microsoft continues expanding AI features in Outlook

While Microsoft has introduced visible AI features through Copilot, the new Outlook Search model takes a different approach.

Rather than adding another AI assistant or changing how users interact with Outlook, Microsoft plans to improve the existing search experience in the background.

Users may not immediately notice the change when Microsoft introduces the model, but they could see more relevant emails appearing higher in search results.

The development is another example of Microsoft using AI to improve existing Outlook functionality.

In other Outlook news, Microsoft finally brought a unified inbox to the new Outlook, while Canada’s time zone changes caused issues for Outlook, Teams, and Exchange Online.

Microsoft has also revived the Send Availability feature to simplify meeting scheduling in Outlook.
