PS3 Just Got Another Surprise Update After a Year
If you ever thought Sony had ended software support for its nearly 20-year-old PS3 console, think again. The company has quietly released a new system update, moving the PS3 to version 4.93.
The latest update, 4.93, improves PS3’s performance
For context, the last update, version 4.92, arrived on March 5 of last year. Now, over a year later, a new update is available. Sony’s release notes simply mention that the latest version “improves system performance,” a phrase the company has used repeatedly since version 4.90 dropped in late February 2023.
That said, the 4.93 update primarily focuses on security, making jailbreaking more difficult. It also renews the Blu-ray player encryption key, which is necessary to continue playing Blu-ray discs on the console. For longtime PS3 owners, installing version 4.93 ensures both system security and ongoing Blu-ray compatibility.
It’s worth noting that the PS3 nears its 20th anniversary this November. In other Sony news, the company recently released an update for the PS5 Pro that adds support for PSSR. According to Sony, PSSR provides “enhanced image stability, improved clarity in fine details, and more consistent performance across supported titles.”
Meanwhile, RPCS3 continues to improve the emulation experience, with its new auto Steam library integration simplifying how players access their PS3 games on PC.
