PS6 Release Date Might Slip into 2028 or 2029, New Industry Report Suggests
The traditional console cycle may be running out of steam. After years of predictable six-to-seven-year refreshes, rising hardware costs and global memory crunch are forcing gaming giants to rethink what comes next. That uncertainty is now casting a shadow over Sony’s next-generation plans.
PS6 release window may have moved to 2028 or even 2029
According to Embracer Group’s latest annual financial report, “some analysts believe” Sony is considering moving the launch of PlayStation 6 console from a previously expected 2027 window to 2028 or even 2029 (via RestEra).
The report points to two major factors behind the release window shift: higher memory prices fueled by AI demand and ongoing tariff volatility in the United States.
“Both factors could potentially have a negative impact on console retail prices, which would, in turn, hamper market growth,” the report states. “In the longer term, higher RAM costs could also cause operational delays to the launch of future consoles.”
The report further adds: “In fact some analysts believe that Sony is now considering pushing back the debut of its next PlayStation console from 2027 to 2028 or even 2029.”
Neither Sony nor Embracer identified the analysts behind the claim, and there is no indication that the PS6 has already been delayed internally. However, Sony has previously confirmed that investment in its next-generation PlayStation hardware is increasing, but key details around pricing, specifications, and launch timing remain under wraps.
Next-gen XBOX console is also facing the heat of memory crunch
Speaking of consoles, lets not forget that next-gen XBOX console, Project Helix, isn’t also immune to memory crunch. While XBOX CEO previously said that it would innovate and make radical changes to its business strategy to keep Project Helix’s price in check. As for release date, Project Helix XBOX is reportedly aiming for a late 2027 launch.
