SharePoint to Get Copilot Chat Pane That Can Edit Pages With AI Prompts
Microsoft is continuing to expand Copilot across its productivity ecosystem, and SharePoint is the latest service receiving deeper AI integration.
According to Microsoft 365 Roadmap entry 558441, the company is preparing a new Copilot-powered chat pane in SharePoint that will allow users to edit pages directly using AI prompts.
Copilot chat pane will allow AI-powered page editing
The feature builds on the existing Copilot chat pane that already lets users ask questions about documents stored in SharePoint. However, the new functionality goes a step further by enabling direct page editing from the chat interface.
With the upcoming update, users will be able to modify both new and existing SharePoint pages simply by entering natural language instructions. Instead of navigating through multiple editing menus, users can ask Copilot to adjust content and layout directly.
Copilot will be able to add web parts, refine page visuals, and rewrite or improve text on SharePoint pages. This approach aims to simplify page editing by letting users describe what they want rather than manually configuring each element.
Microsoft says the feature should reduce the complexity of managing SharePoint pages, especially for users who are less familiar with the platform’s editing tools.
SharePoint continues expanding AI tools
Earlier SharePoint AI updates introduced custom AI agents that can query data from specific SharePoint sites. Microsoft also rolled out an AI-driven Template Gallery designed to help users quickly build pages using predefined layouts.
However, those tools were primarily focused on retrieving information or generating templates. They did not allow users to directly modify page layouts or page content through AI commands.
The new Copilot chat pane suggests Microsoft is moving toward a more conversational interface for SharePoint, where users can summarize documents, search for information, and edit pages using the same AI-powered interface.
Preview arrives in May, rollout planned for August
Microsoft plans to release the feature in preview for SharePoint on the web in May. A broader rollout for enterprise users is expected in August.
In related Microsoft 365 developments, Microsoft also plans to stop sending reminder emails for Teams meeting recordings. Additionally, the company is working on a feature designed to prevent third-party bots from joining Teams meetings.
