Sony Confirms Bungie Layoffs, Destiny Team Takes the Biggest Hit
As previously rumored, Bungie has officially confirmed another major round of layoffs. After weeks of reports suggesting the Sony-owned studio was preparing significant workforce reductions following the end of Destiny 2’s live-service journey.
The confirmation comes via an internal email (now public) from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group CEO Hermen Hulst, who revealed that Bungie is reducing its workforce by a “significant number,” with most of the Destiny team and some Marathon developers among those affected.
The layoffs also extend to several Sony Interactive Entertainment teams that directly support Bungie’s operations. According to Hulst, Sony and Bungie leadership spent months reviewing the studio’s long-term roadmap before reaching the decision. He said multiple alternatives were considered, but the companies ultimately concluded that reducing staff was necessary to better align Bungie’s resources with its current priorities and future goals.
Hulst acknowledged Destiny’s impact on the gaming industry, calling the franchise’s decade-long run “truly remarkable” while thanking everyone who helped shape the series over the years. Despite the layoffs, Sony made it clear that Marathon remains an important part of PlayStation’s portfolio:
“Marathon remains an important part of our portfolio, and we will continue to support the team as they build on the strong foundation established in Season 1 and 2, and as they work on incubation efforts for future projects.”
Sony also says its immediate priority is supporting affected employees through transition assistance while attempting to identify opportunities across PlayStation Studios wherever possible.
