Sony Confirms Shift Away From PC Ports for Major PlayStation Exclusives
Sony's Hermen Hulst confirmed a new PlayStation-to-PC strategy
Sony may be preparing a major shift in its PlayStation-to-PC strategy following concerns about recent PC sales performance and the long-term value of PlayStation exclusives.
The reported change comes shortly after Sony announced higher PlayStation Plus pricing for new members in several regions. Now, new comments from Sony leadership suggest the company may become far more selective about which PlayStation games make the jump to PC.
According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Sony Interactive Entertainment Studio Business Group CEO Hermen Hulst confirmed during a company town hall that Sony plans to hold back major single-player narrative games from PC ports going forward.
Sony may keep future story-driven PlayStation games exclusive
Sony’s cinematic single-player exclusives have played a major role in expanding PlayStation’s reach on PC over the past few years. Games like God of War, Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, and The Last of Us helped introduce PlayStation franchises to a wider audience outside consoles. That strategy may now be changing.
Sony reportedly believes that too many PC ports could weaken the PlayStation brand and reduce the incentive for players to buy PlayStation hardware. Some people inside the company also reportedly feel that recent PC sales did not meet expectations.
If the shift becomes permanent, future single-player PlayStation exclusives may stay locked to PlayStation consoles much longer than before, or avoid PC releases entirely.
Multiplayer games will still expand beyond PlayStation
Sony is not abandoning multiplatform releases completely. The company still appears committed to bringing multiplayer and live-service games to additional platforms when the goal is growing a larger online player base.
Games developed internally or through third-party partnerships with strong multiplayer focus can still launch outside PlayStation hardware. Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls is reportedly still expected to keep its multiplatform release plans.
Sony has already expanded several multiplayer-focused projects beyond PlayStation in recent years. Helldivers 2 and Marathon both reflect Sony’s growing interest in reaching larger online audiences across multiple platforms.
The company now appears to view multiplayer games as a tool for ecosystem growth, while single-player exclusives remain important for protecting PlayStation hardware sales.
PS6 pricing concerns continue to grow
The reported PC strategy shift also arrives as Sony faces growing pressure around the future cost of the PlayStation 6.
Recent reports suggest Sony is struggling with possible PS6 pricing due to rising memory costs and supply limitations.
At the same time, Sony recently introduced a new PlayStation gaming trends widget as it continues expanding platform features and services.
