Sony Hints at Frame Generation for PlayStation, But It's Not Coming Anytime Soon

Sony appears to be preparing the ground for frame generation on PlayStation, but it may not release anytime soon. That’s according to Sony’s Mark Cerny, who, in an interview with Digital Foundry, hinted that while the feature is being considered internally, the release timeline is still unclear.

Frame generation could come to PlayStation, but not soon

Speaking about future graphics features, Cerny noted that an equivalent to FSR Frame Generation should “be seen at some point” on PlayStation platforms. The statement comes shortly after Sony rolled out an upgraded version of PSSR on the PlayStation 5 Pro, designed to better use the console’s AI capabilities.

That being said, Cerny confirmed that there are no more planned releases for 2026, which likely rules out any near-term rollout of frame generation. As of now, it seems Sony is still working behind closed doors, even as similar technologies are already common on PC.

There is also some room for speculation here. Folks at TechPowerUp suggest that with the next-gen PlayStation console expected around the 2027 holiday season, it seems likely that full support could land alongside it. That’s not all; a limited version might still make its way to the current PlayStation 5 Pro, though performance trade-offs could be a concern.

Those unaware, frame generation uses AI to create additional frames between rendered ones, which helps improve perceived smoothness and performance. It has become a major feature in modern GPUs, especially on the PC side, and Sony appears to be moving in that direction as well.

For now, it seems Sony’s approach towards frame generation is gradual, as it is now focusing on building the foundation first. It will be interesting to see whether the full-frame generation support will end up being reserved for the next generation of PlayStation consoles.
