Sony Rumored to Be Surveying Developers Over PlayStation Disc Phase-Out
Sony is reportedly asking game developers for feedback on its plan to stop manufacturing physical PlayStation game discs starting in January 2028.
Sony previously announced plans to discontinue physical PlayStation game discs starting in January 2028. Despite criticism from players, Sony has indicated it will move forward with the plan.
The shift comes as digital purchases continue to dominate PlayStation sales. Sony recently disclosed that 82% of PlayStation game sales were digital in Q1 FY2026.
However, Sony reportedly did not warn publishers about the disc phase-out decision. According to leaker Moore’s Law Is Dead, the company has now sent developers an unusually large survey asking about potential problems that could arise if physical game sales end.
The survey does not confirm that Sony plans to reverse its decision. Instead, it suggests the company may be collecting feedback from developers and publishers before moving ahead with the transition.
Physical PlayStation games still generate significant revenue
Physical games still account for a meaningful share of revenue for some major PlayStation releases.
According to Alinea Analytics data cited in the report, retail sales generated 23% of Marvel’s Wolverine revenue during the game’s first three days.
That figure suggests physical copies can still contribute substantially to launch revenue, even as digital sales dominate the wider PlayStation ecosystem.
For now, Sony has not confirmed any change to its January 2028 timeline. The claim that developers received a survey also remains unverified.
