Spotify Moves to Verify Real Artists with Badge as AI Fakes Crowd the Platform

Spotify has been constantly adding new features since the start of this year. Among which, SongDNA and the ability to turn off videos are a few of them. Well, the platform has now announced a new verification system for artists, as it looks to offer more clarity to listeners around authenticity in the age of AI-generated music. Besides the new “Verified by Spotify” badge, the company is also rolling out additional artist details to help listeners better understand who they are listening to.

Spotify to add Verified badge to artist profiles

To combat fakes, AI, spam on the platform, the company will roll out new “Verified by Spotify” badge, which appears on artist profiles and in search. This will suggest that Spotify has reviewed the profile and confirmed it meets its authenticity standards.

In order to get verified, artists need consistent listener activity over time, not just short spikes. Spotify is also checking for policy compliance and real-world presence, including social media, concerts, and merch. At launch, profiles that mainly represent AI-generated artists are not eligible. That said, Spotify notes that the definition of authenticity is evolving, leaving room for future changes.

“We’ll pair these standards with human review and judgment to identify real artists behaving in good faith, not just filtering out bad actors, giving you a more reliable signal of the authentic artistry behind the music,” Spotify further added in the announcement post.

New artist details bring more transparency

Spotify is also testing a new section that highlights key artist details. This includes milestones, release activity, and touring information in a simple, easy-to-read format. The company compares this to a “nutrition label” for artists. The idea is to give listeners a quick snapshot of an artist’s activity and credibility on the platform. Notably, these details will appear even for artists without the verification badge. It gives broader context beyond just the music itself.

Roll out timeline

The verification system will roll out gradually over the coming weeks. Spotify says more than 99 percent of artists that users actively search for will be verified at launch. This includes a large number of independent artists, not just major names. Moreover, the company is prioritizing artists with real audience engagement over content farms or passive listening tracks.
