The zombies are back, and this time they’re bringing friends. Undead Labs finally pulled back the curtain on State of Decay 3 during the XBOX Games Showcase 2026, giving players their first real look at gameplay. The survival sequel is officially targeting a 2027 launch and will release on XBOX Series X|S, PC, Steam, PlayStation 5, cloud, and day one on Game Pass.

First trailer uses only in-game footage

According to Undead Labs, every scene shown during the showcase was captured directly from the game running in Unreal Engine 5. While some sequences featured cinematic camera work, the over-the-shoulder segments represented the actual gameplay perspective players will experience.

The developer says Unreal Engine 5 has helped improve visual quality while also enhancing the moment-to-moment survival mechanics and combat systems that define the franchise.

Dynamic Plague Nests bring new threats

One of the biggest additions in State of Decay 3 is the introduction of Plague Nests.

These dynamic enemy hubs evolve over time and react to player actions. Players can destroy them, but only temporarily, as the infection may spread and return.

Undead Labs explained that Plague Nests feature different “personas,” meaning they can behave differently in each playthrough. Some may expand aggressively, while others focus on creating pressure in different regions of the map.

This system aims to make every save feel less predictable and encourage players to adapt their survival strategies.

Combat and zombies receive major upgrades

Combat has also been expanded beyond previous entries. Players now have access to both quick attacks and heavier power attacks, creating more tactical melee encounters. The studio wants combat to feel more responsive while giving players greater control during fights.

Zombie variety has also increased significantly. Different infected enemies now feature unique behaviors based on factors such as decay level, armor, and overall threat classification.

The result is a more dangerous world where players must constantly adjust their approach depending on the enemy type they encounter.

Bigger map and fully shared co-op world

Undead Labs says the playable area is roughly four times larger than a single State of Decay 2 map. The entire map remains open from the start, allowing players to explore freely without waiting for later unlocks.

Co-op supports up to four players in a persistent shared world. Players can stay together, split up across the map, or focus on separate objectives while contributing to the same community.

Progress made in multiplayer remains meaningful, with players able to advance story content, construct facilities, and expand into as many as three separate settlements.

Weapon crafting embraces survival creativity

Players can modify weapons using scavenged materials, creating unique tools such as serrated machetes and reinforced blades backed with rebar. These modifications affect gameplay statistics, including stamina consumption, damage output, and dismemberment potential.

Scavenging remains one of the core pillars of the experience. High-risk locations such as Plague Nests often contain valuable resources, creating difficult choices between safety and reward.

The zombie survival title was not the only major announcement during the showcase. Microsoft also presented a new look at Fable, revealed Halo: Campaign Evolved, and officially announced Persona 4 Revival.

Players who missed the presentation can still watch the full XBOX Games Showcase 2026 broadcast to catch every announcement and trailer from the event.
